For many people, the raison d’être of global health is the achievement of health equity for all people worldwide. Reaffirming this view is the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” Yet, after decades of programming and billions of dollars invested in global health, alarming health inequities persist across and within countries. The current COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these health inequities, underscoring the need for the field of global health to do more and to do better.

Two leading Colombian universities have been added to the effort to build the epidemiological data-analysis tools of the future through IDRC’s grant of CAD1.9 million to Epiverse — a global collaborative of interdisciplinary experts, led by data.org, building an open-source software ecosystem.

Around the world, women and girls have disproportionately suffered the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19. Before the pandemic, women were doing three times as much unpaid care and domestic work as men. Data from UN Women shows that women make up 70% of the health workforce worldwide and are therefore at the forefront of the COVID-19 response; in 11 countries where sex-disaggregated data is available, women account for 71% of confirmed cases among healthcare workers. On many fronts, the limited gains made on gender equity over recent decades are at risk of being rolled back.

High-quality, policy-relevant research to ensure recovery for all

In the lead-up to the pandemic’s second anniversary, IDRC gathered lessons learned on response and recovery efforts.

A project, implemented at five health centres and 15 satellite dispensaries in rural Morogoro, Tanzania, has improved the quality of emergency maternal and newborn services. This recently closed project, Accessing Safe Deliveries in Tanzania (ASDIT), was part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa initiative, supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Global Affairs Canada and IDRC.
