TTI Phase 2 Institutional Support: Makerere Institute of Social Research

This funding will help strengthen the Makerere Institute of Social Research's (MISR) role as a credible public policy institution in Uganda by enhancing its ability to provide high-quality, influential, and policy-relevant research.

About the Makerere Institute of Social Research
MISR envisions itself as a centre of excellence in multidisciplinary research that aims to improve academic knowledge, inform public policy, and contribute to economic and social development. MISR's mission: to deliver professional research, publishing, training, and outreach activities. Its main research areas include governance and civil society, health, education, information and communication technology, environment and natural resources, migration, displacement and resettlement, urbanization, and economic policies. It receives its funding from the Think Tank Initiative (TTI).

Funding for think tanks
TTI is a multi-donor program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy.

This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions. This will help them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally. For MISR, this project will help enhance its research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement.

Centre of excellence in Uganda
Through this support over the next 4.5 years, MISR is expected to
-produce policy-relevant research work
-convene forums and workshops for scholars
-bridge the gap between academics and policymakers
-champion the understanding of strategic policy issues in Uganda
-contribute to improved public policy and policy management in Uganda
-build and maintain a track record of high-quality research
-increase demand from policymakers and other stakeholders for data and research from MISR
-strengthen organizational performance through improved systems and processes
-engage with key stakeholders to make the connections between research, policy advice, and public information
-strengthen the skills of local researchers to conduct public policy research
