Support for strategic communications and uptake of knowledge outputs

The Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI) is a multi-donor Initiative supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, IDRC, and South Africa’s National Research Foundation. Since its inception in 2015, the Initiative has been strengthening the capacities of science granting councils in 15 sub-Saharan African countries to support research and evidence-based policies that will contribute to economic and social development. Specifically, the Initiative is strengthening the ability of participating councils to manage research; design and monitor research programs; formulate and implement policies based on the use of robust science, technology, and innovation indicators; support knowledge transfer to the private sector; and establish partnerships among councils and with other science system actors.

The overall goals of this project are to provide training and other forms of technical support to participating science granting councils in strategic communications and to facilitate the development and uptake of knowledge outputs. Other activities will include the development of various SGCI communication materials, documenting and disseminating stories of change to demonstrate the impact of SGCI’s capacity-strengthening activities, supporting the councils to plan and convene SGCI meetings, and commissioning masterclass papers to inform annual fora.
