Pilot Mentorship Program for Tobacco Control Researchers

This project builds on previous investment in three rounds of a small grants research competition in support of ratification, implementation and enforcement of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) under projects 001726, 103330 and 103769. It will do so by offering expanded capacity-building opportunities for tobacco control researchers through a parallel mentorship program. Research for International Tobacco Control (RITC) has identified an initial cadre of awardees who possess excellent tobacco control leadership potential. The idea is to enhance the capacity of these individuals to be future tobacco control champions in their respective countries and regions, and through their role as mentors, to stimulate a younger generation of researchers to become involved in tobacco control. The effectiveness of the mentorship program will be evaluated at the conclusion of this pilot phase, with a view to launching a formal program in the fall of 2008.
