Making bridges to remunerated economic activities for young vulnerable women in Mozambique

This project will provide evidence on the labour market barriers faced by young women in urban Mozambique. It will address whether and how soft skills (i.e. communications and people skills) and digital competencies can enhance their economic prospects.

Using a mixed-methods approach that combines insights from quantitative and qualitative data, the project will examine the impact of an approach that bundles soft and digital skills and work-based learning to link youth and women to decent remunerated economic activities. The lessons from this project will be scaled up within Mozambique and they will be used to provide policy and programming guidance on ways to reduce the barriers that women face in relation to participation in the urban economy.

This project is part of a cohort of IDRC-supported projects aimed at boosting decent employment for Africa’s youth, which focuses on two niche areas: soft and digital skills, and apprenticeship and mentorship models that work for youth. Developed as part of a collaborative effort between IDRC, the Dutch Knowledge Platform on Inclusive Development Policies (INCLUDE) and the International Labour Organization, the goal is to provide practical guidance and tools for policymakers and practitioners to help realize aspirations for large-scale positive change through a coordinated effort
