Recent changes in Burma offer the right climate to address the urgent need for evidence-based sustainable development research. This grant will establish a research fellowship program to allow 10 candidates annually to examine Burma's development processes, policies, and practices.

Research fellows will strengthen their proposal development, research methodology, data analysis, and report writing skills in fields related to IDRC's mandate, including agriculture, climate change, environment, health and health systems, information society and innovation, and social and economic policy.

The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD) at Thailand's Chiang Mai University will manage the four-year program, which targets junior and mid-level academic and non-academic Burmese scholars. The program will support collaboration between research fellows and researchers working in Thailand and other Greater Mekong sub-region countries. They will participate in training workshops and seminars to present their work. Their research reports will be published as part of the RCSD working papers series.

The program's launch takes advantage of recent governance and societal changes in Burma, which have created an encouraging research environment where research can influence public policy. A sufficient supply of researchers with the capacity and means to conduct quality research is essential to exploit these new opportunities and contribute to the early transition process in Burma.
