This project will explore the experiences of emerging and developing countries in order to identify how the concept of international development has evolved and where it they may be heading. It will do so through a series of workshops convening scholars and practitioners from both the developing and the industrialized countries. The workshops will provide material for a multi-authored manuscript describing the historical context and new reality facing developing countries; how thinking has evolved on particular aspects of development; and how different organizations espouse and use ideas to influence development. The edited volume will be submitted to an academic press for publication, along with a companion volume appropriate for university teaching.

Summary

This report summarizes proceedings from the first of three authors’ workshops for the IDRC project on development thought. Presentations were made by twenty-two authors for the forthcoming edited volume, as well as the editors and a Steering Committee member. Difficult questions arise regarding appropriate baselines, benchmarks, categories, and criteria for measurement. There were recurring, cross-cutting themes across several panels and presentations.
