Economics for the Environment: Research Capacity Building in South Asia

This project will enhance environmental economics research capacity in South Asia through a program of research grants, training, and networking. It provides funds to the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) to support research and increase strategic partnering. SANDEE is a regional network seeking to strengthen research capacity on poverty, economic development, and environmental change, and to inform local and national policy discussions on these topics. Established in 1999, it receives parallel financial support from IDRC, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. In 2011-2013, SANDEE provided 46 grants to researchers working on poverty, natural resources, and climate change issues. Results include 27 peer-reviewed publications, 23 working papers, and 40 conference presentations. SANDEE also trained 437 participants on technical and policy-oriented topics. Finally, SANDEE partnered with organizations to influence policy. For example, five SANDEE grantees were involved in the government expert group informing India's 2013 report on Greening India's National Accounts. SANDEE's next phase will focus on topics including trade-offs between ecosystem services and economic activities, locally relevant adaptation to climate change and related costs and benefits, and green development policies and programs. It will increase multidisciplinary and transboundary research, and strategic partnering in activities to influence policies and programs. This project will help SANDEE young researchers' capacity through stronger in-country programs in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
