Capacity building for financing national research in Côte d’Ivoire

The Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in sub-Saharan Africa is a multi-donor initiative supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, IDRC, South Africa’s National Research Foundation, and the German Research Foundation. Since its inception in 2015, the Initiative has strengthened the capacities of science granting councils in 15 sub-Saharan African countries to support research and evidence-based policies that can contribute to economic and social development.

In order to provide participating councils with the opportunity to build on the improved skills acquired in the first phase of the initiative, a priority area of the second phase is to enable the councils to benefit from funds to administer calls for research proposals in partnership with their peers. This 28-month project, funded by Sida, IDRC, and resources from the Fonds pour la science, la technologie et l’innovation (FONSTI) of Côte d’Ivoire through the Programme d'Appui Stratégique à la Recherche Scientifique (PASRES), will allow FONSTI-PARES to launch a call for national research projects in priority development areas for Côte d’Ivoire.

This grant from the second phase of SGCI will be primarily aimed towards funding collaborative projects involving the private sector to promote relevant research results. All funded research will account for issues of gender and inclusion and the participation of women scientists in research and innovation. The project will also build the capacity of FONSTI-PARES, which will help increase the scope of this funding and improve the management of calls for proposals.
