The supplement “Advancing health equity and gender equality: Digital health in the Global South” draws from work in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lebanon, Peru, and Vietnam. The articles provide perspective from these countries on how to ensure that every person in marginalized communities can gain from digital health innovations. The supplement features an introductory article, commentaries on gender analysis and networking among the seven projects, and original research papers from five implementation research teams.
The teams received funding under the Strengthening Equity through Applied Research Capacity building in eHealth (SEARCH) project. From 2013 to 2017, they tested how social and technical innovations — particularly digital health — could improve the quality of healthcare through strong community participation and leadership, with a particular focus on maternal and child health.
